I'm no expert, but dogs being  warm blooded animals like us, I would think its to do with his threshold.

I suggest you go and buy a copy of the 'book of the bitch' before anything else - it's important you understand all the aspects of breeding from mating through to birth and rearing a litter, in order that you are well equipped to face any problems which can and do arise when breeding.

When a dog and bitch mate they usually tie - if this is not occurring it may suggest that the dog is not experinced or that the bitch is not in full heat and is not allowing the dog to complete the mating.  Have you any experienced breeders neary who could advise you?  Perhaps the kennel club would be a good point of call.

Should you really be trying to breed if you have done so little research you don't even know the procedure?

If you succeed, I sincerely hope you will do much more research into the care of a bitch in whelp and the things that could go wrong during birth.

If they're trying but not locking, its a bit too early for them - leave them to it and they should manage it in a week or so. We bred ours with a friends bitch 9 weeks ago and last night she gave birth to 3 gorgeous pure white boys (both parents are white) they are adorable and are so big they look like they're a week old already! Good luck and let us know how you get on.
