Syphoning Petrol

I am scrapping an old M Reg Escort. It has about half a tank of petrol in it and I bought a syphon kit for £2. I tried to empty it today with no success. The tube didn't come out of the tank wet. What's going on?

Push it in further? (if it's long enough to do so)...

It seems to come up against something that's stopping it going in further though.

Maybe an anti-syphoning device?

Don't forget to drain the brake fluid reservoir and the window wash bottle... and to take the air out of the tyres ;-p

if it's being scrapped just punch a hole in the fuel tank and drain it that way (filter the petrol before reusing it though)

It means that I wouldn't have to spend £20 on petrol and to me that's a lot.

Oh ok snags, sorry I'm not up to speed on those smiley faces. I've replaced the Escort for a really nice Y Reg Subaru Impreza, it is a "gem" with only 52K on the clock. My husband has just said why run the risk of contaminating a perfectly good engine for the sake of £20 so I guess I'll leave things as they are.
