I bow to your technical mastery here but, as your post indicates, the only 'System32' I'd expect to see on a Windows PC is a folder with that name.
However a web search throws up numerous references to a trojan/virus called system32.exe. If that's what DC_FC is seeing in his startup list, perhaps there's cause for concern?

Don't start panicking yet! Chuck will probably know what's going on ;-)

Chris is quite correct to pull me up on this one, system32.exe is indeed used by nasties to try and hide by using what looks like a valid name.
If DC-FC (what's that stand for?) could clarify if he is seeing paths that include system32 as a folder or if he is seeing system32.exe as a file it would help, the former is generally not a problem, the latter will be a problem.
If you are in anyway unsure I'd certainly suggest a full virus scan and a full scan with malwarebytes (preferably in safe mode)

Download and run the latest GLARY UTILITIES it has a startup mamager attached to it in a module if you run it you can check your startup entries and it will tell you if the highlighted entry you are checking is legitimate or not and if it can be disabled or deleted or can have a delay start. If you do this with each entry then it will clean up your start programs
