What is an Emo? I`ve just read something on a website about stereotypes,mentioned emos,what are they?All I know is I think its summat to do with music.

I'm not 100% sure but I heard EMO stood for EMOtive music - i.e. new music that provokes some sort of emotion.

Which simply sums up the way music is written, produced, marketed, listened to today

Isn't every type of music EVER suppsoed to be emotive in some way?

i thought it stood for EMOtional, to do with type of people, music, facial expressions etc.. i think people have started to use it for lots of things

I think it's a term used to define particularly angsty rock, the sort often produced by the likes of Muse or My Chemical Romance, that kind of thing.

It's mainly newly-signed nu-metal bands, who hold their mic clutched in their hand, have shortish scraggy hair jelled down over their faces, bend forward as if they are constipated, and screech on and on and on for hours about nothing intelligent or even emotional. "Daddy buy me a car!"

I found that EMO does indeed stand for Emotional style of music.

Most of this is PUNK related and came out on vinyl. I think it has evolved into a "fashion" and is not the pure thing it started out as.

There was a Q about this a few weeks ago and I described how emo kids look...I'll see if I can find it and post a link...people are correct that it's just short for 'emotional' and soozmac gives a very accurate definition!

My daughter keeps talking about "oh she is an EMO" and when I look its a girl/boy with a long fringe swept to one side of their face...sort of soft rock...my friend Laz the sweaty scot..a hive of useless./useful information says it derives from Emo Phillips whoever the hell he is...some comedian from way back when in the states...thinks its sort of  soft rock music they like but its more of a fashion like goths n chavs etc

Well thanx all of ya-got good idea what emo is now.As for punk how can these new bands be classed as punk?Punk to me is sex pistols,clash,dead kennedys etc.These new bands about as punk as cotton wool
