What do you make of that? Someone said that some stock had gone missing, then someone pipes up, well I haven't taken it. No-one even accused him or directed the comment at him. That seems a bit suspicious in itself. What do you think?

I think its exactly what I would have said to be honest.
They could have thought you were accusing them, or they could have been being humourous. I wouldn't read too much into it.
I never touched it honest
Yeah I agree NoM - I likely would have said 'so you can count me out' as well.
that kind of response annoys me a little sometimes ..

you can be saying something to someone and they say 'well its not my fault' ... and you say 'yeah i know its not your fault, i wasnt saying it was your fault .. i was just saying'!! .... grrrrr ... lol ...
Bit like the old joke where the teacher asks the class who knocked down the walls of Jericho and little boy shouts out wasn't me sir.
No, I don't think it could be classed as suspicious, they perhaps might just want to get their point over first, I might be inclined to think that those that kept quiet would be suspicious. (Just my opinion)

looby -I never saw it that way.
Suppose I cant be bothered with people who tiptoe around the issue by just making a throw away comment without accusation-so therefore I save them the bother by taking myself out the equation -makes it easier to whittle it down to the culprit :)

oh yeah i agree dris,
and ive probably done it myself too if i know im not the culprit.

but when i know im just saying something to someone, not even wanting an answer to it or accusing them, i dont see why they need to jump in and say 'its not my fault' cus theres no need...

oh ok, its just me i know ... lol ....

afterall they dont know im not wanting an answer or im not pointing a finger do they - and its only natural we want to remove ourselves from being doubted if we know we know we're not the culprit!

... soooo, i'll shurrup up then now shall i .. now ive talked utter rubbish! lol ... :o)
'The lady doth protest too much,methinks'- Hamlet Act III scene II.Often misquoted but meaning the more one protests ones innocence the the more likely ones guilt
Some people might take silence as an admission of guilt. I would probably respond in the same fashion as the op states (or even worse if in a bad mood) ☺
Some people always get blamed for stuff, whether they've done it or not. Maybe "well I haven't taken it" is a defence mechanism.
It's always best to get in first and totally deny it. Just like on here, they don't have any proof.
Thomas dont think it was AB the OP was referring to unless ive missed something doughball:)
