Just got clocked at 96mph on M6. What will get for this offence?

Cheers MF. Someone told me that over 95mph you get prosecuted by magistates. Anyone know if this is true?

Don't know about that but in this area the magical figure of 100mph gets an automatic ban, whereas a few mph less only results in a fine + penalty points.

The figure for a court appearance is around 95, but I can't remember for sure what it is.  As ianess says, a ban is almost certain at 100 mph, or 30 mph above other limits.

I was basing it on someone I know who got nicked on the M27 at 93.7mph. Maybe there is a 95mph cutoff point. Anyway, let us know.

I was told by a police officer that over 100 will get you an automatic court appearance (but not necessarily a ban, as this is at the judge's discretion), so I suspect you will get the standard 3 points and fine.

 

Having said that - ANY speeding on the motorway is an SP50 offence and may liable for the same penalty - http://www.carnet.co.uk/carlaw/general-speeding-mway.html - The cut-off speed for court appearances may vary between police forces.

Assuming the police who stopped you didn't give you a fixed penalty (3 points and 60 quid), you'll get a summons, should be able to plead guiilty by post, and will get three points and probably 200 quid fine unless you're very rich or very poor.
