new internal hard drive

i had a computer built for me by a friend a few years ago and it died recently (hard drive). having a work pc i never really bothered with it. now i have the inclination to look at it again. as it is hand built, i can take out the hard drive and work out the connection requirements etc., the hard drive is a maxtor 60gb ide type. my friend now lives overseas now (in case you ask).

how do i go about finding what size i can put back in (i.e. larger capacity) - assuming there might be a limit on the motherboard? any pointers? also, will i need anything else to compliment a larger drive to make it work as it should?

If you mentioned what the CPU is I can give you a pretty good idea of what size drive it will take...

But to be honest, anything worth using won't have a size limit worth worrying about.

hmm not sure about the cpu. would i be better off just doing a straight 60gb swap?

If 60GB is big enough for you it would be the safest option...

But, as I mentioned in reality any usable computer will have no effective limit on the hard drive size. the easiest thing to check is probably the motherboard specs, if it has ATA133 then it will support LBA48 and there will be no limit to the size.

If you lived in north essex Id give you a couple of spare drives, I've got a drawer full of them :)
