I need to know whether West Sussex is a county in it's own right or whether it is simply a division of Sussex where Sussex is the county? Doing an essay, so a speedy response would be welcomed! Thanks a million x

It's a county in its own right
Sussex is split between East Sussex and West Sussex.  So you have seperate councils but one police force.

I wouldn't go by Police forces.

Thames Valley covers Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Berkshire and has Milton Keynes added on for good luck!

There are two administerative centres...one for each half of the "county"....Chichester for West Sussex and Lewes (where i live) for East Sussex.
This makes it two seperate counties.
East and West Sussex have been separate counties since 1889, in fact.

BTW, too many Easties on this thread for my liking, so I'm here to redress the balance a little :-) Up the West!!
inapickle could I just ask whereabouts you live? We're thinking of moving to E Sussex.
