Are they "on duty" for 24 hour shifts (with the mandatory breaks of course)?

Do you have to have special training to be one, take exams , sleep with someone?

Seriously - Eds must be subject to the EU working time directive, surely - 48 hour week max, or is it different for Gnomes?
one of the old eds used to be a member cos they emailed me in reply once and used thier own email address.
