In the process of decorating my lounge. Just wondering what you do. Are your ceilings the same colour as the walls or do you paint them white. I am using a very pale grey Fired Earth colour and can't decide what to do. I live in a very old cottage with narrow wooden beams and quite low ceilings. Thanks for your opinions.

More normal to have white - it makes the room brighter - I have white ceilings and creamy grey walls everywhere - but it's your house, have whatever you feel comfortable with.
I think I would stick to white - not because it's conventional, but because it will "lift" your low ceilings.
White will lighten and heighten the ceiling as Vagrant and Lucca say, especially where there are any shadows caused by the beams. But if you want to keep a 'period charm' look you might consider an 'aged white' appearance, using a darker creamish sort of colour. (Think of old country pub ceilings). This could sit well alongside the grey, too, without being too dark in itself. Apart from when white alone is used, ceilings are almost never painted the same colour as walls - it tends to shrink the room.
We live in an Edwardian house and use antique white for the ceilings. It's light enough to lift the room, yet not startling white, so it seems to fit in with an older house.
Crown Aged White or Dulux Sail white, Dulux Dove white if you want them a bit grey.

Thanks for all these helpful answers. My current colour is a shade of cream on walls and ceiling but I think I'll go for a slightly antique white. My bank holiday sorted! Cheers.
