candle making

Hi wonder if anyone can advise me? want to take up candle making - what wax is best to use and how much needed? Do I need special fragrances and colours and is it possible to use existing candles to melt and remould? Many thanks!

Hi CD, I used to make candles few years back, I used to use a large white slab of wax (I'll ask my dad what kind later and let you know). You can buy colours too, any arts & craft/hobby shop should sell them, they look like really thick crayons and you can slice off a chunk to use.
When I wanted to have scented candles I just added essential oils that i would use in a frangrance burner.. and I used to always keep the wax of old candles to use again, meant the colours would be interesting when melted down and other dyes were added.

hi i did that a few years ago, i started off with a kit from a craft shop but then did my own thing. Coloured them with wax crayons, put esensual(spelt that wrong i know) oils for smell, old candles to use them up. You need some old thick bottom saucepans to melt the wax in. Good luck.

Don't melt the wax by heating the pan directly over a gas or electric ring. Put it in a larger pan containg water and heat that. Also have a fire extiguisher handy and a basin full of cold water to plunge your hands in when you spill hot wax on them.
