Every time I boot up my laptop now a new icon called ''debug.log'' appears, I did not download this or to my knowledge anything connected to this, I have tried to delete it,
dumped it in the recycle bin and emptied it but it keeps coming back again so can anyone tell me what it is and how I can get rid of it for good. I am running windows XP by the way.

Thanks Steve.5 I have tried that, been into add/remove programs but it's not listed there so I cant uninstall it. I dont have the faintest idea where it came from.
Right click on it, go to Properties and find where the file is......go in and delete file.
uninstall google talk

Thanks everyone will try it all, what exactly is Google talk chuckfickens? I have google as a search engine on here but have never heard of google talk, could it be something to do with google then chuckfickens?
It's google chat program (their version of MSN messenger)

That is known to sometimes leave a debug.log file on the desktop

The other obvious thing to do would be to open it and read it... if you right click on it, select open with > choose programe and then choose notepad you'll be able to read the contents and that may tell you what is putting it there.

Thanks for your good advice as always chuckfickens (and everybody else) will let you know how I get on...

Still trying to get rid of it but it just comes back, anyhow I did as Craft said, right clicked on it, clicked on properties and it says:

Name: debug.log
Type of file: text document
Opens with: notepad
Location: documents and settings\user\desktop

I still dont know why it has appeared, would it help if I tried system restore and went back a few weeks ?
dont know if this will help you!
Debug.log File Automatically Appears on Desktop
Problem and Solution
Ankit Asks,

I am running Windows 7. Recently I have noticed an empty file with name debug.log automatically appearing on my desktop. I have deleted it many times but it appears again without any apparent reason. Please explain what is this debug.log file and how can I get rid of it.

you are not the first to ask this question. In the last week, I have got about 8 emails asking for the solution for the automatic appearing of debug.log file problem.

After some research, I have concluded that this issue can be easily resolved. The debug.log file is actually created by a misconfiguration in the Google Talk plugin.

To solve the issue First close your browser. Then Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs. Find Google Talk Plugin in this list of programs. Right click on it and click on Repair. It will start the repair process. After the process is over restart your computer.

The issue will be probably resolved and you will not see the debug.log file again. In case, the debug.log file still appears on your desktop, go ahead and uninstall the Google Talk Plugin from the Add or Remove Programs, by clicking on Uninstall instead of Repair, as explained above. After this you can re install Google Talk Plugin if you need it but you will never see the debug.log file again. Hope this helps!
