Fuschias on the Isle of Man

We have just returned from the Isle of Man where we saw fuschias growing wild all over the island, some 15 feet tall.

Does anyone know the name of this hardy variety? They obviously survive the winters.

Fuchsia magellanica is the one you see as hedges in Devon and Cornwall and Southern Ireland, and is probably the hardiest. These areas, and the Isle of Man, are usually a couple of degrees warmer in winter than most other parts of the UK, so there's no guarantee it would survive everywhere. That said, we have had one of the coldest winters locally for many years, (-13°C) yet this variety is nevertheless doing very well this summer.

there are a number of hardy varieties that do well try a specialist breeder as a mixed hedge looks stunning... some of the smaller flowered varieties are tougher than they look
