Either some time during, or very shortly after, WW2. I remember that women used to have to resign from the Civil Service on becoming married roughly about the same time.

When I worked as cabin crew for an Arab airline, we were not allowed to be married, and would have to resign if we did so (male and female)

There were several who married in secret.
