They'd have been too scared, and with good reason. These days we mostly (in the UK at least) have the freedom to speak out on - or even reject - religion without fear of persecution.
If there *has* to be another pope, I agree someone younger and perhaps a bit more 'real' would be more suitable. But in the catholic church, is that, in all honesty, ever going to happen? I think not.
