separation, access to personal belongings

Hi my son (40yrs) recently separated from his partner. He moved out of the house which was then sold, but when she moved out only gave him short notice before doing so. He collected as much of his belongings as he could but some of his moved to the partners new home.
Since then he has had no contact with her but recently sent her 2 texts asking could he come over and pick up the rest of his belongings - she did not reply. He then sent a 3rd text which resulted in the police visiting his place of work. They told him that she was accussing him of harrassment. He explained that he was trying to get what was his, that he had never spoken with her or approached her, and offerred to show the police the 3 texts he had sent her. The police were not interested at all and said that should he contact her again he would be arressted for harassment.
I cannot believe this because I think that the police are out of order.
Short of taking the legal route anybody any suggestions as to how he might approach her to get back his belongins without been arressted?
