Hi all,

Whilst I accept that Tric Trac fits in the spaces (and have used it myself, not having found a better answer ! ), can anyone give me a definition or description as the only one I can find is "a form of backgammon historical late 17th century from french, from the clicking sound made by the pieces". Definition from the Oxford English Dictionary.

 wikipedia  gives name in crossword clue also tric trac as a dice game if this is any help

Shut the Box - Also known as Canoga and 'Batten down the Hatches', this is the old gambling game for as many players as you like.  Players throw two dice and choose to shut either the numbers thrown or sum of the numbers thrown.  Each player tries to close all the numbers from 1 to 9 and thus shut the box! The box had small slides to cover the numbers when thrown, and the Tric-Trac comes form the sounds of the sliding pieces of wood, or the die being thrown into the lid of the box.

Funny old clue that. I found Tric Trac as a form of backgammon.
Canoga is a variation of Shut the Box .Also played with a dice.
These games are entirely different but Tric Trac seems to be the only thing that fits.

Trictrac it is. Also spelt tricktrack (rarely).
