Hard times are indeed hitting all, why even the poor overseas offenders payment to return to their home countries once they had served their sentences has been slashed from £5,000 to £1,500.
The original scheme introduced of course by the last Labour Government was intended to prevent inmates launching lengthy and expensive legal battles against deportation.
Why not scrap this ridiculous scheme and at the same time make it far to expensive personally for them to launch lengthy and expensive legal battles, and then just chuck them out.

it is reported that the scheme helps reduce running costs in the prisons by around £1.2m per month, but imagine this is gesticulation since 400 'saved' places will be filled by someone else, foreign or otherwise.

>That is of course if you are not Muslim.
I had a serious eye infection last year.
Went to see the eye doctor, who examined me and give me pills and cream that cured the problem.
He has worked at the same hospital for 40 years and seen thousands of people with eye problems and probably saved the sight of many people.
He is a Muslim.

Thank you youngmafbog for correcting VHG,
I wondered where we were all going with the mention of the Eye Doctor, I thought there was some ingredient in the pills and cream that was forbidden by Muslims, until I read further.
No VHG I wasn't leaving any Muslims out, I just did not wish to offend.
One has got to be so careful these days, hasn't one?

/// A lot of these people pay gangs much more than 5K to get them in here. Why would they ever dream of leaving? ///
A fair point sandy, but they should never be given the choice of 'to leave or not', upon release they should be transported back from whence they came.
If they have no papers etc, then this should be France in 99% cases, maybe then France would be more vigilante on their borders, instead of just letting them pass through.
