Can anyone help point me in the right direction where I can find out about all things 1974 ?

Not so much events as prices, services, etc.

How much was a newspaper............a pint of beer............a glass of coke...........packet of cigarettes..........bus fares.........pub opening and closing times.........you know the kind of thing :o)

Well as a clerical assistant in the Civil Service I earned �25.50 per week....

I used to buy a ham and tomato roll at lunch-time for 10p.

Pubs were 11am to 3.00pm then 5.30pm to 11pm Mondays to Friday and 12pm to 2pm and 7.00pm to 10.30pm on Sundays.

Cotton loons (flared jean type trouser's) were �2.50 in top shop.

My boyfriend's Benson and Hedges were 36p a pack of 20.

I paid �7 to see Pink Floyd at Earl's Court (might have been '73).

Amphetamines were 10 for a pound (alledgedly).

I think milk was about 4p a pint.

Ciggies varied according to brand (and area). Embassy No. 1 were about 34p at Ipswich pub prices but brands more favoured by Northerners were only about 30p in Sheffield shops.

Carrot99 must have lived in an area with very generous licensing hours because most pubs throughout the country closed at 10.30pm, rather than 11.00pm.

Ipswich licensing hours were 1030-1400 and 1700-2230 (extended to 2300 on Fridays and Saturdays). Sunday was 1200-1400 and 1900-2200.

Immediately outside Ipswich, in East Suffolk, the hours were similar but lunchtime closing was at 1430.

Sheffield licensing hours were 1100-1500 and 1700-2230 (with, at that time, no extension on Fridays or Saturdays). Sunday licensing was 1200-1500 and 1900-2200.

Beer prices varied across the country. The Student Union bar, at Sheffield City College of Education would charge around 10p per pint. The local pubs would charge around 15p per pint. Ipswich pubs were charging around 18p per pint..

South Yorkshire had heavily subsidised bus fares (which led to the demise of the near-bankrupt South Yorkshire County Council) with any journey costing 5p for adults and 2p for kids. In other areas of the country a bus journey of a couple of miles (e.g. from a housing estate into the local town centre) was around 15p to 20p.

I used to buy a monthly bus pass which gave me unlimited travel in the county for �20.
I can remember Yates Wine Lodge selling the roughest wine (paint stripper) you could imagine for 5p a small glass.
LSD tablets cost 50p each and you could get a decent size lump of dope for the same price.....allegedly

ooh mrs O !! Our rent was �4 a week for a bedsit in North LOndon. Then we got a proper flat in Winchmore Hill (there's posh) and it was �8 a week then we bought our first house in Tring Beds for �11,000.

as far as i recall from 1981 it was 7 quidish for a 16th and drug prices have stayed pretty level.

Bridge Over Troubled Water LP sold for �2.50 most LPs were 1.99 or 2.25, Cassette tapes were �2,25 or �2.99 and 8 track cartridges were a whopping �3.50!!!! Infact they were so expensive our only real customer for the 8 tracks was Joe Royle, he was a Kris Kristofferson fan as i recall.
