Can an Ipad replace a desktop PC?
15 Answers
Was curious that if you used a desktop PC mainly for surfing can an Ipad fully replace it?
For example can you plug an ipod into it to charge and sync?
Used to use the pc for so much more but not nowadays so am looking to replace either with laptop or Ipad.
Thx

I'm guessing as with most things Apple its best to wait until an upgraded Ipad arrives next year.
Apple do like drip feeding additional functionality.
Maggie why is the Galaxy better than the Ipad? Have seen it being demoed but noticed a smaller screen. Has it got better connectivity?

better connectivity, an excellent camera and you also have a built in mobile phone and it runs on goggle android the only draw back is the smaller screen.

Yes it can as i have done so, I do have Pc's and laptops and of course there are things that you cant do. but for my daya to day computer use i can do every thing.
open edit and save all microsoft docs, email is very good, web surfing is best of breed,
Printing is easy (wifi or bluetooth) I have jailbroken mine so i can also use a usb stick via the camera kit.
think about what you would use a laptop for , if its just email and surfing which are netbook strong points then of course it can replace them.
I work in IT an dget all manner of harware to test and use including the Galaxy and streak (i disagree, the IPAd is better its just slick and works well designed) I went with IPAD as i had a lot invested in itunes apps for my iphone,
not been able to play flash can be an annoyance, but have adjusted mine so it can play some flash, but there are alternatives out there, and flash is on a decline as more and more sites use html5 for the video sites, I watch plenty on you tube,
its easy to put your dvds on there, either ripped or downloaded.
its far too expensive though for what it is, if you have £700 to spare a pc for that money would be a better investment, but you cant carry that around with you.
its a big iphone. yep thats exactly what it is. the iphone was great and i used all the time but wanted a bigger screen hence getting the ipad.
IPad sits in your hand nicely (bit heavey) reading books is easy on the eye , watching films is very easy on the eye.
alternatives.
the other harware manufactures are playing catch up and rushing products out, must run android, which isnt great on big screens yet.
anyway enough waffle, go in to a shop and try one out, if you like it get it.
why do you need a camera on the device, bit big for a phone, and connectivity wise I can do all the galaxy can
and i can us

Example.
I have just used an IPAD to connect to a server farm in a diffrent country configure a few services and reboot.
over the week , I have updated several web sites with the ipad on the train.
done the tesco's shopping online
read a few chapters of DEXTER and found wally several times. all whilst listerning to music of my choosing.
I have a few online datatstores like dropbox so a huge amount of storage available plus i can connect to home and media thats there (several tb's worth)
my 5 year old daughter has kille dmore zombies with plants than i care to mention.
and my 8 year old son has watched spongebob on some long trips, and done some homework on it via the school web site.
Multiaksing is a bit of a pain by its absence and i can confirm the alternatives even with jailbreaking arent good. but you adapt working style, there is a decent clipboard and application memory, so if i closed a web page down to look at an email when i open web page it will be where i left it.
what would be nicer, I guess the front facing camera is enivetable.
with reguards to apple being controlling of there apps and Android being free and easy.
android apps are in a large part buggy and resource hungry, Apples have gone through testing and as a rsult work better, plus apple has several hundred thousand apps that have been checked, android is no where near that yet so you wont be missing anything.
also SATNAV is great on a big screen, and i can play any format of media dont always belive what you read.

yes it is an ipod touch with a bigger screen thats the point. the bigger screen is a far better tool for media consumption.
there is only the apple data port, the idea being you use wifi and bluetooth, and or the web to transfer files which is far easier than it sounds and more use than a usb stick.
I can plug a usb stick in to mine as its jailbroken and has the camera kit adapter.
the idea is you move away from disks, usb sticks and dvds and use the ove rthe air technologies.
if you want usb sticks, dvd play and a keyboard then yes a laptop would be better.
I can get data off my lap top quicker than you could with a usb stick. plus if i forget to bring my pc with me i can still get the data not the same with a usb stick.
but the thing to gain from this is the IPAD is a LARGE IPOD TOUCH or like an IPHONE.
much like my tv is large version of the mini dvd player and screen we take in the car sometimes same thing just bigger and better because its bigger.
