Most prisoners spend more than 20 hours a day in their cells. If the policy of making them work comes into operation where will the money come from to pay for the extra prison officers needed to supervise them?

depends on the prisoners i used to go to school next to a prison and we would see some of the prisoners doing the garden work at the wardens houses near the prison
where are these jobs that the Tories have sandy?

Good question, Bobbisox. I don't think sewing mail bags or breaking rocks are still part of the prison regime, so gawd knows

well they used to give them jobs before, making things to sell on for profit, i expect that covers the extra staffing costs
The prisoners presumably earned a wage and gained skills so why not.
I remember watching an episode of CSI where the prison were running a call centre for a catalogue company.

The US seems to be tougher on criminals than we are in the UK. They give more realistic jail terms and there is actually hard labour for the prisoners to undertake.
woof did you see about the serial sperm banker over there had impregnated 14 women and said he wasn't going to stop
he was put in jail and made to work
we are to damn soft here
Yeah - can't remember how long he was imprisoned for. The USA take on-payment of child support payments very seriously.

I like it in "Law and Order" when somebody gets 753 years with a chance of parole after 633 years. In this country the law just doesn't allow the judges to give much longer sentences.
well those old buggers should retire same as everyone else has to woof
Take it off the 'Pram Faces' that walk round town with their 'Top of the range' phones & designer clothes!!!!!!
//They give more realistic jail terms//

//I like it when they give 753 years//

Is this an irony test?
I think Prisoners should give something back to the Communities where they reside.
Local Councils have had to cut back spending on Pavement Repairs, Grass/Hedge Cutting, Litter etc so they can do something useful without Pay rather than sit in their Cells all day watching TV.
a remote island would be better red ;0)

The problem with longer prison sentences is that discipline breaks down. Most prisoners know that with good behaviour they'll be released on a given date. That helps keep order in prison and reduce staffing costs.
Trouble is taking work from private companies

If you lost your job because the company you worked for went under because they couldn't compete against prison labour - well I suspect you might be on here with a thing or two to say about it!
there are no jobs the prisons are full, make it so it is not so cosy in there!
I think people who reckon this country is too soft ought to move to one of the countries they compare us with to find out just what life is like elsewhere. Methinks some people might be in for a big shock and some of you might find yourself locked up for being able to speak your mind which basically we can do over here.
