..or follow a blackbird about in the morning, they stamp on the ground to imitate rain and the worms pop out.
Preferably after rain and in the dark (with a torch, obviously!)

You need a pic spit, get an avatar - you were always my favourite on Tiswas. http://www.hawkin.com...tro-toys/spit-the-dog
You wont need to dig them if you scatter some peelings and left over veg in you borders. Just cover it over with a board or an old bit of carpet.
They really like their potato peelings..

The last time I bought for worms for match fishing mail they were over £20 for one kilo.
I actually ended up puting a gravel board frame on the borders with a lid on it... just keep putting scraps in it... It will save all the searching.
I seem to remember a program with Rory McGrath and Paddy McGuiness where they were trying out bizarre sports - one of them was worm charming! Contestants used a fork in the ground which they wiggled about, and this made the worms come to the surface. Got to be worth a try!
