Rant about overhead gantries...

Can can anyone please give me a simple explanation as to why from junction 5 clockwise on the M25 to Heathrow, the overhead gantries relating to speed limits of 40/50/60 mph etc. continue to be on when the traffic is almost stationary the whole way round?

Surely the so called experts who monitor the traffic-flow, would operate these on & off accordingly? As this section of the motorway is heavily populated with CCTV cameras.

It just drives me nuts, sitting under one of these signs with 60mph showing, when I'm stationary!!!

WHAT'S THE POINT? Logic & common sense just don't exist anymore.

So, just turn the B****y things off when not needed.

Yes, it is a bit silly. But as far as I am aware the "variable speed limits do not begin on the clockwise carriageway until after junction 10 (the A3).
warning sign - 'workers on carriageway - slow'

then blimmin hurry up then!
yes new judge

regluar users of the 25 know that before the a3 junction clockwise and after when going anti-clockwise - you can give it large
it's a maximum speed. These still have to be posted. Just try to control your emotions.
New Judge, they have put up gantries for variable speed limits around by junctions 1 to 3ish, but as yet they are not able to use them except for advisory speed warnings.

All the variable speed limit warning signs are painted over with grey paint.

I too sat stationary for two hours under an advisory 40 sign the other day.
Too often gantries and matrix signs show out of date information. I wonder why the traffic Wombles don't make themselves useful by telephoning control when they see wrong information.

A few days ago I was going under signs saying 'long delays junctions 3 to 1a', but I sailed up to the Dartford tolls and there was only one car at the barrier ahead of me.
Quite so, hopkirk. But has was mentioning there being gantries from Junction 5 clockwise, hence my remark.

You are certainly right about the advice given about congestion etc. I take no notice of it at all now as more than 80% of the time it is inaccurate. I just take my chances.
So he did.
