pruning Tamarisk

I have a lovely Tamarisk tree in my garden but it has grown from the central stem to one side. I was wondering if it would be OK to cut back all the branchy growth back to the central stem. Will it sprout out again?

It has been cut back most severely several times and in a short time is back to it`s full splendour. Not being a gardener I have not attempted to make it a nice shape but it certainly seems to thrive on being cut back.
