My daughter inherited a wild lawn covered in dock, dandelion daisy etc. after 2 doses of verdane they are not looking at all well and no black patches, just dead looking weeds. we may have to reapply in the spring and then get them out and fill up the patches with seed but I would recommend verdane. I have tried granules but liquid killers seem to work best for me and as both my water butts are full to the top I find these a practical solution.

Your lawn will only go black of it is full of weeds and not much grass as the black bits are dead weeds. If you use Verdone as a spot weedkiller just hitting the dandelions then the lawn wont go black. Other weeds may still be present though but you can tackle these more selectively if you want the green appearance to remain. You can also use Resolva lawn weed killer which is just as good.
