Gnawing noise

For the last couple of nights, at roughly the same time, I have noticed a gnawing noise in the garden coming from the same place. Now, do I take a stick and a torch out tonight and have a poke about (and hope it is a hedgehog - which I love) or do I ignore the noise in case it is a rat?

I wouldn't be able to resist and would go poking (carefully) about with a torch and stick!! At least if it is a rat you will know what the noise is! :o)

sherrardk - you are obviously a good mother. My late mum would have sent either my brother or I out to investigate.

But I do hope it is a hedgehog or, maybe, a cute little fox.

I would be the same as Wingnut and be out there with the torch. Seems a bit strange that it`s the same time though - an animal wouldn`t be that regimented as regards time. Maybe it`s your neighbour staggering home from the pub :-)

I think I'll get the broom out of the little shed thing and have a poke around (hoping it's a hedgehog - the one's I have 'known' in the past have always seemed to appear at about the same time each night). Saying that, I probably won't hear it tonight!

Get waylaid doing my on-line shopping so didn't go outside at my usual time tonight - will be armed with my torch and brush for tomorrow night though (might have a poke about in the day time to see if I can find any signs of life).

Nocturnal animals IMO do tend to do things at the same time. When I take the dogs out at stupid o'clock there is a Little Owl sat in the same place most days by the side of the road. Sometimes it flies away, but mostly it just sits there.

If you poke around with a stick it will have gone bythe time you get there. Try leaving some nuts (in shell) near where you heard the noise, If the creature eats them you will be able to tell from the empty shells what kind of animal it is from the way the shells have been gnawed.
