have let lots of companies/authorities know my wife has taken my surname, but does anyone need to know that i am now a married man? do you pay less tax once your married?

Don't pay any less tax - at the moment anyway, but you may need to let any pension schemes, insurance companies and you employer know so that any benefits go directly to your wife in case of any need to claim. Not sure if your car insurance etc might change just because you will now be seen as more responsible!
