iPod Nano for children - good idea?

My 7 year old son wants an iPod nano for Christmas!! It has to be a Nano - not an MP3 or shuffle - he knows what he wants unfortunately!! My question is: I'm worried about the volume levels in the headphones affecting his hearing - not that I think he'll use it EVERY day - but how do I monitor this? Are there special headphones available? Has anyone else bought one for a child? Any tips? Thanks.
