Apparently it is now illegal for anyone to knock on your door, cold calling, if you display a sign at the front door. I realise this means companies etc. but does it also apply to religious groups, and charities, hoping to either get money or convert.
I remember seeing Martin Lewis on Watchdog (I think) recently saying it is illegal for them to know if you have a no cold calling sign on your door. A fairly new introduction I think. I can't say if this applies to the other groups you mention though, sorry. Be nice if it does.
If you go to

you can download a "No Cold Callers" sign for your window which can be printed out.
You can also read about the silent telephone calling firms and the new legislation involving much higher possible fines
Cold Calling Control Zones have no force in law. They are set up in neighbourhoods in partnership with Local Authorities, Trading Standards and/or Police.
It doesn't say it's illegal on the site, but that 6 energy companies ahve agreed not to knock when there's a no cold callers sign, and you are entitled to complain if they persist.

The only group "officially" limited by these signs is Energy sales. Since May the big six energy companies agreed that their sales people would not knock on doors with 'no cold caller' signs. On 1st October this policy officially became part of the EnergySure Code of Practice.
