Removing hair gel/wax from wardrobe doors?!

We have a wadrobe in a spare room that our eldest son used to use to fix his hair and it would appear that he used to wipe the excess off on the doors which over time has soaked in. The marks/stains have been on the doors for some years now.
They are proving to be quite stubborn to remove.

Can anyone recommend something that may work?

Sorry, should've added that it is a light coloured varnished wooden wardrobe.

Don't really want to sand down and re-finish if at all avoidable!

I don't think you'll have much choice. It's not as time consuming as you might think. You just need to sand it enough to give it a key. Then stain it...comes out looking quite rustic.

I've done this with my bedroom furniture and there's quite a lot of it...

Have tried scouring and white spirit but it is actually in the wood so sanding it is!
