What do these taste like, are they cheap? They said you can get them from your fishmonger and sometimes the supermarket but I've never seen them.

I have no idea who hugh is but I'd be weary about eating shellfish raw as the food poisoning risk and Im not sure a slimy sloppy sensation going down the back of my throat would actually stay down.
Have you tasted these?

If the fish-shellfish or any other for that matter-has just been caught, you need not worry about food poisoning. As I said...eating raw clams-and oysters-has always been popular, and with relatively few instances of food poisoning.
I just don't particularly like the sensation or idea of swallowing a live thing. Now-raw fish in sushi is a whole different matter... ;-))

I find that unless you live in Londonshire or the local centre of excellence you cant get the unusual fresh ingredients they use on the telly - I live in the Midlands and regularly stay with my brother near Waterloo when I go to the trendy markets and stock up on some of the lovely things you see on the telly - can rarely get them around here - in fact the only fishmongers we have in my town are the big supermarkets - I absolutely love Samphire but have never found it in the shops - never seen razor clams in Tesco !
Don't confuse ordinary clams with razor clams - they're totally different from each other.
These are the clams used in clam chowder and in spaghetti vongole, or found for sale (in vinegar) in pubs, for example.

This is a razor clam - so called because their half shells look like the blade of an old-fashioned cut-throat razor...

I'd advise anyone not to bother with razor clams - it's like eating rubber tubing!!
