Underground to Richmond they used to lay on free buses from outside the station Transport for london or Twickenham stadium should be able to confirm
sorry mis read...free buses go the other way after the match too.... also to Twickenham station but they get caught in more traffic
It is a short walk, maybe 20 minutes, to walk to Hounslow mainline station, where you can catch a train into Waterloo, in doing so you will be able to avoid being stuck in traffic trying to get to Richmond or Twickenham. Traffic is always grid-locked in the area after a capacity event.

Short walk ?
given how long you could be stuck in a queue at the closest stations 20 minutes isn't long
Yes, it is, I do it often and I am talking about my walking speed! I live very close to the Stadium and even strolling along I can overtake the vehicles trying to get away! Come out of the Stadium at the North end, near the roundabout where Tesco's is and turn left up Whitton Dene. Then turn right at the end of Whitton Dene, at it's junction with Whitton Road and even I can get to Hounslow Station in five minutes from there, and I believe it could be less crowded than either Richmond or Twickenham. It's worth looking at google maps for an overview of the area. J
yes, you can easily take 20 minutes to get on a train at Twickenham after a big event, maybe more, so Hounslow mainline's definitely an option. If you fancied walking even further you could get to Hounslow Central tube, but that's not a particularly fast way into town.
