Where can i find details of a deceased's insurance policies?

My friends father died recently. he always told her he had enough insurances to "take care" of things when he died. Unfortunately he had alzheimers/dementia for about 10 years and the only policy details we can find lapsed or were cashed up 10 years or so ago. Is there a central address that could search for policies or should we just write to all the major companies? Same for his bank account....

thanks, it maybe clutching at straws but is worth a try. she is an only child, not well paid, but she wanted to do the right thing by her father funeral wise. now she has to pay.
