The families old laptop,a Sony FR315S, hard drive has finally given up the ghost. The drive is a Hithachi 2.5" HDD 60GB IDE HTS428060F9AT00, which is very hard to source. Would a Hithachi 2.5" HDD 60GB IDEHTS541060G9AT00 work in its place? Thanks

Yes, but why not buy a larger hard drive while you have the chance?

ChuckFickens, u r always there in a moment of crisis! My daughter will use the laptop once it is back up and running. A 60gb will b fine for her. I am going to go for either an iPad or a laptop (£400) to spend n treat myself.
Neither .. Both are a right pain, so far as I am concerned : )
Chuck, re. upping the size of the HD, I had (I think) the same lappy and I installed a bigger drive and the damn thing never worked properly again even with a clean install of the operating system (XP) when I reverted to the old HD all was fine again. I believe in my researches on the net I found something about the BIOS not being able to handle a bigger drive (I went to 250Gb). I have no idea if that was the case but this was my experience and I'm not a novice with 'puters, although not in your league :-)
