How do I trace the date someone died (for free)

Is there any free websites that you can find the DATE of someones death - I dont need anything else like documentation just a date. I know the month and year but not the actual day. Everything Ive been on lately you have to pay for!

Your local library may have free use of ancestry.com. You might have to book a computer for an hour but they should be able to help you.

Unfortunately any online sources will only give the quarter of the year the death was registered., eg March 1950, which means the death was registered sometime between Jan 1st and March 31st 1950. To get the exact date you would need to purchase a copy of the death certificate. Alternatively, if you can find where the person was buried you may find the date of death in the church records. Not sure if cemeteries keep such records as date of death. It would be on any headstone though.

The only potential way of getting an exact date online is if the deceased died between 1861 and 1941 AND either left a Will or someone obtained a Grant of Letters of Administration. If this happened, the exact date of death is given in the Probate Calendar. They are on ancestry.

There are limited burial records on Find My Past or you could try a grave website such as www.findagrave.com however they tend to be more US based.

Dotted around the web there are various indices of churchyards etc which may prove useful but unless you know the timeframe and area it is difficult to know which one to suggest.

If you post a name and date on here, often someone will have a tinker around to see if they can find it.

Do you not know where they are buried, it would be on their gravestone.

Try familyseach.org, they may have a record of the burial date if not the death. In the Search Records, go to Record Search Pilot.
I don't know where you are but www.lan-opc.org.uk is a database covering Lancashire, it's growing weekly so it's worth looking at regularly for that part of the country. It also gives links to similar things in other parts of the country.
