the best suggestion that I have (and it worked for me with loads of effort) is to buy a glyphosate gel weed killer designed to paint on the leaves. It may be a bit late in the year now as it has to be growing vigorously. You paint the weedkiller on the leaves and then DO NOTHING. let the weedkiller do its work and it will kill right down to the root. Retreat if you get regrowth but resist the temptation to remove the wilted and dying foliage. Most people who find this fails have tidied the top growth off too soon and the root doesn't get killed.

If you can't persuade your neighbour to treat theirs though, it will return!!

As mentioned, any systemic weedkiller containing glyphosate, the best being round up.

Make sure it's nice and warm and no rain is due for 24 hours. The weed will start to die back after 2 weeks or so.

I'd send a few crafty squirts over the garden fence too.

PS....glyphosate is totally pet, child, animal and bug friendly

thanks guys for your answers, will this weed killer affect  any shrubs near by

it doesn't affect the soil (becomes inactive on contact) but will destroy leaves that it touches and may kill the whole plantr if enough leaves are affected. That's why in an established garden, the gel format makes things a lot easier

woofgang's right, glyphosate's the only thing which will do it. I tried everything else and descended from an organic approach to nuke-the-********-with-chemicals ... which did the trick.

Good luck

I agree with the answers already given, but if the vineweed is growing around your plants, I got this method from Kew Gardens, and it works, train the stuff arond a cane thats higher than your plants, then when the vineweed gets above your plants, paint the leaves with your chosen weedkiller.
yes glyphosate...but painting it on is so tedious...and you cannot spray it due to the damage to other plants...so put a long cane in the ground and train it up the cane...when it is long enough...a couple of days probably...then dip the ends into a bowl of glyphosate and let the bindweed drink all the weedkiller into its system...heh presto...no bind weed...may need a number of applications. Then again a neighbour of mine who is a TV gardener says the best way to rid it is to move house!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
