23a: Approach where someone covers wide range etc. If Longshot is correct for 16d, have got S?a?t?r?u? Did think this was Traitorous but wont fit in!

Only word I can come up with with these letters is scattergun. I cans see the 'wide range' but nothing else seems to fit. What do you think?
I've seen this answered several times as Scattergun - that seems to be the consensus answer for this one.
I have also got scattergun but not very happy with it can't find anything else though!!
How about scatterbug for this one.
I was undecided f it should be 'LONGSHOT' (as an outsider)
or LONGSTOP (using the cricketing analogy of last line of defence). I went ffor the former then opted for
SCATTERGUN
