As the named suggested, it was aimed at young unemployed, who were forced by the threat of loss of benefit to work peanuts. The scheme was mostly exploited by unscrupulous employers, who got a pool of young workers for next to nothing. It was not a great success and cost a fortune to run until it was scrapped.
The new proposals will, if they are daft enough to introduce such a thing, suffer the same fate.
The timing isn't good either, when Government cuts are likely to put another 2 million currently working and paying tax, into unemployment.

I wonder how it will work? £65 is about 11 hours at minimum wage, or a couple of hours a day. What would be the support costs and administration costs be to employ someone for such a short time?, Would an employer think it value for money for or just not bother?
That is assuming normal rules are applied. If they are expected to work full time (40 hours) for their £65, they will in effect be on a quarter of the minimum wage. I can see that option being attractive to potential employers. They could sack all their minimum wage staff and employ Jobseekers, and reduce their wage bill by 75%'.
It was crazy policies like this that had them rioting on the streets 30 years ago, some politicians never learn.

I agree with Gromit.....getting the great British unemployed and unwashed out in the morning to do some work is a good idea, but impossible to put into practice. Would you like to go into their smelly, dysfunctional, untidy homes to drag them out of their "pits" to do some work?....I wouldn´t.
As Gromit says, it will die a death.

A lot of the people about to lose their jobs will be the long servers who are expensive to employ because of their wage scales. A very many of the 50 somethings will have little prospect of getting another job soon. A printer friend of mine has been unemployed for a year. He is 57, had an explemplary work record, is skilled, and has paid his taxes all his life. He has applied for hundreds of jobs, but has not been taken on, one suspects it is because of his age. Is he now expected to do these unspecified non jobs for a pittance?

Trouble is we will have to set up a quango to run it, supply protective equipment such as high viz jackets, gloves, possibly safety boots etc etc.
Then there is the requirement under health and safety law for adequate training.
Transport to and from place of work.
An effective management structure with reliable reporting of attendance and effort put into the tasks.
I am sure there are many other costs involved aswell, but we can always raise taxes to pay for this.

advice to mature job applicants: never put your age or date of birth on your application form, never put the year you left school, just put the qualifications/grades achieved and always use the term 'educated to GCSE standard' even if you failed them all,.
Your CV has to get you through the screening process and to interview, that's when you have the chance to shine.

I think you have hit the nail on the head Gromit that applies to many of the long term unemployed. Rather than take an unskilled job below their talents they prefer to be unemployed and claim the unemployed pittance. Take any day of the week and you will see cyclists and runners spending their time more creatively and for self interest.
