my father has recently passed away and we have found a Refuge Assurance co Ltd policy no. F2818165 is this worth anything and who should we contact in this respect

I think you'll find Reguge was taken over by Royal London:

The Refuge Assurance Company was taken over by Royal London. Contact them on 08450 502020, they are very helpful and will send you a claim form which you need to complete and return with copies of the deceased relevant death certificate, the will, the orignal policy document and any other relavant paperwork. The policy should still be valid and they should pay out the sum assured plus bonuses where applicable. Good luck. I'm just doing the same with my late Father's policy which was taken out in 1920 !
