How to stop a dog jumping up

Hi all,

It's been a while since i was on here and a few things have changed so hopefully i'm posting this in the right place.
I have recently rescued a border terrier from the kennels. He is a lovely little thing but has no manners at all lol.
I have managed to train him off lead and in the house quite well but the one thing that is bothering me is that he jumps up constantly when you are trying to walk. As he is so small i am frightened i fall over him, or worse still one of the children do.
I have had dogs all my life and can usually manage but i am struggling this time. He is only a year old so is still just a baby.
Any help anyone can give would be greatly appreciated.

Try taking him out to train him rather than for a walk, i.e. make sure you have time to deal with him. Every time he jumps turn away and go the other way so he has nothing to jump on, if he still jumps make him sit before you go on, even if you have to hold him in a sit. Try having a titbit in your hand or a favourite toy, hold it ahead of him so he gets the idea of walking towards it. If you are in the right position, bring your knee up as he jumps so it stops him by making contact with his chest. Also make sure you have a collar that gives you control, a half check/combi collar will give you the leverage you need to bring him back down to earth where he should be.

Oh how lovely we have a lovely Border Terrier, they are generally easy to train.Good Luck, with him. What is he called and what colour is he? U dont normally see Border Terriers in a rescue centre. Im sure he will give you years of pleasure, they are artful little things. Let us know how you get on with stopping the jumping up. x

work on a really solid sit, totally ignore him when he jumps, I mean really blank him, turn and walk away then call him to you, ask for a sit praise and treat...dogs are smart, he will soon pick up that jump up gets me nowt, sit gets attention. Make sure that the kids don't set him off, no waving arms, shouting, running, waving food or toys around.

Just to add a point to this good advice A Gentle Leader worked with mine. he disliked it so much he soon cottoned on. It also pays off to give him a treat only when your open hand is below his mouth..

Thankyou so much for the advice. We are working at it as we speak :o).
He is a black grizzle terrier and his name is Digger. He is only a year old and a gorgeous little man. I have already house trained him, which is quite quick as they think he had only ever lived outside.
Franky and Shep have taken to him quite well, especially Franky. It's so funny watching them play as Digger is tiny and Franky is a 7 stone greyhound.
Hope you and yours are all well Ruthann. It's so nice to speak to you again. I have been very busy since i lost Rocky to cancer. I decided to volunteer for the greyhound trust and as a result have had a total career change and now work in kennels.
I can't think of nothing better than being surrounded by animals all day :o).
