What is a Category D car?  Is it one that has been written off and rebuilt?  Cant seem to find reference to it.

Category D is an insurance write off that typically was rated at more than 60% but less than 100% of the car's cost to repair.

If you buy it make sure your insurance company will cover you.

PS Cat D also covers stolen cars that are recoverred after the insurance company have paid out

Found out that the car i am interested in was classified as cat d cos the insurance company replaced the car for the owner because it was only 1 year old!

Car has now been repaired and roadworthy and apparently insurance companies are prepared to insure it....

thanks

Not all insurance companies will cover a Cat D and will give you a lower price if you come to claim.

I would certainly get a thorough inspection done before you buy it. There's an awful lot of cat D cars that salesmen tell you were written off because they got a little damaged. But there has to have been at least 60% of the value of the car knocked off in the accident and that normally means something a bit more serious especially when the car's under a year old.

Think of how much 60% of the cost of this car is and that's the sort of damage it got.

A cat D can be a good bargain though but I'd be looking to get a sizable discount over the normal price.

If the car is an old shed, the slightest cosmetic damage will render a Cat D write off in the eyes of an insurance company. I bought an old Land Rover that had stopped an Escort in its tracks from 40mph. It just bent the rear crossmember on the Landy, it was perfectly safe and legal to leave it as was, but the insurance company wrote it off because it would have cost too much to have it professionally repaired. I bought it, immediately MOT'd, insured and taxed it and have used it with no problems since. Incidentally, having used it to pull four tree stumps out of the ground, the crossmember is now straight again.
Six months ago I purchased a Category D Mercedes CLK320 Elegance Cabriolet that had been stolen/recovered, the car was less than 5 years old and had only covered 28,800 miles with full Mercedes service history.

I saved thousands of pounds on the purchase price and the only damage was that the interior door cards were both ripped and the base of the rear seat had been removed - I guess the crooks were looking for a tracker!!!

I purchased, and had fitted, the above replacement parts at a total cost 400.00, I've since covered over 3,000 miles in the car and it's an absolute delight and my total saving is huge
Category D's are usually a good way to buy a car cheap. Repairs are usually cheap and straight forward. However, be prepared to lose up to a third of the cars retail value when you sell it on, AND most importantly you MUST tell an insurer, they wont ask and will insure the car if you dont tell them. Then once you come to cliam they will tell you to get lost because they will look a bit closer on the records and see it's written off previously. REMEMBER insurers will do ANYTHING to get out of paying, so they dont ask too many questions when you insure. You must make sure you TELL THEM EVERYTHING and get it written into the policy summary. Most insurers will only insure a cat D car if they were the people who wrote it off. They will then require proof of repair. The following insurers do not insure Cat D's, Sheilas Wheels, Halifax, Esure, Sainsburys. If anyone knows who does please let me know! Im still looking. I bought a brand new BMW 500 miles on the clock for 5 grand, needed a new drivers door and airbags. thats all. :)
I am about to buy a Cat D off ebay it's a 2005 Nissan Micra i like the car and don't think i would be wanting to sell it in the near future. The seller is asking for 2500 for it i know that it's worth around 5000 it has very low milleage. I have spoken to my insurance company and they have said that they will insure it but it needs a report from a garage to say that everything is fine before they go ahead.

The insurnace company that will insure CAT D's is TESCO cheap and cheer full and i will in sure anything.
Buying a category d car is an ideal way to own a car that would normaly be un-affordable. My last car (a porsche) was a cat d. My current car is also a category d insurance loss vehicle.
I now run a website that deals with cat d cars http://category-d.co.uk/
I'm looking to buy an Automatic Motorhome, not a Mazda Bongo but something around the size of a Sprinter. I need it to be at least a two berth with a toilet and cooking facilities.
Does anyone know where I can purchase a CatD Motorhome/Campervan?
