Windows 98/Internet Explorer

I've just bought a second hand computer and when I try to open My Documents/My Computer/Control Panel etc it tries to open with Internet Explorer which then comes up with the error message saying IE has performed an illegal operation and I cannot open the documents etc.  Any suggestions how to fix this so they don't open with IE?  All help gratefully received!  Cheers

I would suggest wiping the machine completely as you don't what bugs may be lurking, or even just a load of useless stuff clogging up the machine. You can restore to factory settings and then reinstall your software again. That way any problems should be wiped too. there are sites that will take you through how to do it.

Right-click on the document and click
Open With > Choose Program...
Then select the appropriate program to open it with (Word for a letter, paint for a photo etc) and check the little box in the corner which says "Always use this program to open this type of file"
