Someone told me a while ago that having items like air freshners dangling from your rear view mirror can be an instant MOT failure ? Is this true ?

That is amazing, I thought their function was to test the safety of the vehicle's mechanical parts, not the drivers peccadillos (I know someone who keeps his condoms under the driver's seat).

Yes I had a cross attached to my driving mirror and was told that unless I removed it, it would be classed as a failure. Told it was a distraction when driving. So took it out, and after MOT put it back

I can understand the point of dangling items 'obstructing' the view..but I thought an MOT was purely for roadworthiness of a vehicle....brakes, lights, tyres, etc etc...

There is a very good reason for having a dangling object hanging from the mirror being an MOT failure !

It is not really a failure because it obstructs your view, it is a failure because it is
dangerous, especially for cyclists and pedestrians.

Why it is dangerous, ( as 99% of drivers do not know) is, if there is something constantly moving within your field of view and after some time your brain gets used to it and the space the stupid dangly thing moves in and it starts to get ignored by your brain it also ignores everything that happens in that space which includes pedestrians, cyclists or an obstruction.

Think about it.

There should be a ban on them and points plus a fine for all the idiots that have them!
