Mobile Phones with 3G

Is 3g really necessary for a mobile phone. How many times would one use this facility monthly. What is it usually used for. I was thinking of upgrading and a reviewer said that the only drawback to the smartphone
phone i was interested in was that it had no 3g. Your opinions would be appreciated.

well my iphone has 3g and wifi. so when im out or when my wifi goes down at home (as its doing daily) i can still connect to net and check emails, websites etc.
