I've never really understood what the weather forecasters actually mean by 'squally' showers! Does it mean drizzle or rain, on and off?

I think it means sudden heavy bursts of rain which go as quickly as they come
The basic word 'squall' originally meant a discordant scream or harsh cry, such as a hungry baby might make. From the early 1700s, it then took on the meaning of a violent gust or sudden wind-storm, on the basis that wind often makes the same sort of howling noise. 'Squally rain', therefore, means sudden, heavy rain accompanied by strong gusts of wind.
