emoticons
I think they are called emoticons.
I don't recall their ever having a specific name as such - I've always referred to them (and heard them referred to) as ASCII art:

What they definitely aren't, though, is emoticons as they are specifically facial expressions used to convey the mood of the writer...
Not really.

are emoticons, as they represent en 'emoti'on.

\m/ Ô¿Ô \m/ is more like ascii art, albeit very basic.
ASCII art is usually more complicated than a smiley face.
"... like ascii art, albeit very basic. "
An emoticon is a facial expression pictorially represented by punctuation and letters, usually to express a writer’s mood. The symbol givebn as an example is a face and therefore an emoticon.
What emotion does Ô¿Ô convey, then?
Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ
It doesn't. Neither does d(^_^)b but is still an emoticon.

Wide-eyed surprise?

Ô¿Ô

Spare
No it isn't. If it doesn't convey an EMOTion, it's not an EMOTicon.

See what I did there? It's awfully simple...
In that case, I would go with wide eyed as the Ed suggests.

The entry for emoticon in Wikipedia needs amending if you are correct.
A surprised owl with a broken beak?
Ô¿Ô represents Frank & Beans ... who ever said it was a face?
