Travel Advice to Wortley nr Sheffield
I'm driving from Stranraer to Wortley, near Sheffield on a Friday afternoon. What's the best route? Years ago, going on frequent trips to Halifax we used to exit the M6 at Junction 36 and head through Kirkby Lonsdale and Skipton. Should we try this route again or use the M6 and M60 east round Manchester?

It might be faster on the M ways, but on a Friday afternoon you need just one bump and you are knackered. At least if you have a problem on A roads you can grab the map and work out an alternate route. Bradford can be a bit of a nightmare too, so I would get on to the A629 at Keighley and just follow it through Halifax and Huddersfield (probably what you are planning to do anyway).
The AA's route finder calculates the Skipton route as 243.4 miles, taking 5 hours 17 minutes. The M60 route is calculated at 262.4 miles, taking 5 hours 2 minutes, so there's not much in it. My own instinct would normally to go for the easier (motorway) route (i.e. via the M60). However I'd want to check the weather first. If snow or fog is forecast I'd rather avoid the M60, which is sometimes nearly as bad as the Woodhead or Snake passes for driving conditions.
