Prom Queen is different from Homecoming Queen.  Each high school has a "homecoming" football game - it's usually the last home game of the season and is held in October.  It's a big occasion, and each class (freshman, sophomore, etc) builds a float to celebrate, and three or more senior girls are nominated for Homecoming Queen.  The entire student body then votes.  (Usually it's nothing more than a popularity contest.)  During halftime at the homecoming game, the candidates and their escorts walk out onto the field, and then the Homecoming Queen is announced.

Proms are held in the spring, and are an entirely different activity.

I was a Homecoming princess my senior year. I think I still have my tiara somewhere! Basically, school groups (including academic/social and sports) nominate a girl, then a school wide vote is cast and the top girls are the Queen and Princesses.

Not neccesarily a popularity contest in the traditional sense as at least at my school the girls had accomplishments under their belt- academically as well as in after school activities. (not that i'm biased!)

it is sort of corny, but its one of those traditions that make American highschools unique and, dare I say it, fun.
