Diamagnetic materials.

Most material are diamagnetic but the magnet needs to be very powerful to actually make them move.

Google diamagnetic levitation and look for the story about levitating the frog.
if the "other things" are magnetic materials then they will be attracted to the magnet, not "pushed away". The magnet will have a north pole and a south pole and so will repel (push away) other magnets when two like poles (N-N or S-S) are brought close together.
Anyone know why the answer (from kenwest?) was removed. I'm sure the answer given was "Another Magnet"

Yes Kenwest has gone rather makes my last night post look like I am talking to myself, no change then.
