Water colour painting - anyone can do it?
12 Answers
An 8 year old boy called Kieron Williamson has been told he has exceptional skills with a par to Monet and has just sold his collection of personal water colours for £150,000 in just half an hour.
However a professional painter has said that anyone with a little bit of sense could easily pick up the techniques of water colour painting. He publishes an e-book and illustrates the techniques with videos, all free of course at this website.

i doubt there are many 8 year olds who could paint as good as kieron.
personally, i gave up with watercolours as i found them too fiddly, although i have no doubt if i'd stuck at it and had a few lessons on technique i could have produced something reasonable. no matter how much sense you have, or what techniques you're shown, you do need some natural talent. in my opinion.

Anyone can learn to paint and draw better but not all will become selling artists. Mastering the skills doesn't make you creative. You could become an illustrator, but not necessarily a creative artist.
It is similar to music. You can learn to play an instrument very competently but that doesn't mean you can become a successful composer.
I also think publicity and marketing play a big part in how many artists become successful.
If you want to improve your own painting techniques, why not contact your local art club. Many, like ours, offer tuition courses and workshops in a range of media - not just in watercolours.
Incidentally, watercolours are harder to use than say acrylics but are for some reason more popular with beginners.

Kieron Williamson's work is already exceptionally good but, unsurprisingly, he's currently only following in the style of others. The real test of his genius (which I suspect he genuinely possesses) will be when he starts to develop his own distinctive style of painting.
